The Saddest Jersey In My Collection

We all have that one jersey in our collection that seemed like a good idea at the time, but perhaps didn’t age so well as more time passed.

For some of us, this has probably happened more than once. I can certainly count the number of times using the fingers from both of my hands.

I’ll admit it. I can’t predict the future, and sometimes the players I choose to root for end up failing for one of the teams I support. It happens, and most times, we move on.

Most of these jerseys have been removed from my collection. Trust me, it was not hard to say goodbye to my Anthony Thomas Chicago Bears jersey, or my CJ Spiller Bills throwback jersey. There is one, however, after all these years, I have not been able to remove from my collection.

Let me tell you about the saddest jersey in my collection.

Hop in the time machine, and let’s go back to the summer of 2004, almost 20 years ago.

I will forever and always be a Chicago Cubs fan. In 2004 at the trade deadline, the Cubs pulled off a blockbuster trade. The Cubs were able to acquire Nomar Garciaparra in a trade that involved 4 teams, Boston Red Sox, Cubs, Montreal Expos and Minnesota Twins. The Cubs had a need for Nomar and the team was in a position to make the playoffs. To be able to acquire a player of Nomar’s caliber, it should have been a home run of a trade for the Cubs. In hindsight, Boston was the big winner of the trade, acquiring Orlando Cabrera and Doug Mientkiewicz and…
